"We’re trying to make TomTom navigational systems available to people across all platforms that are important to consumers. We continue to see a robust demand for [portable navigation devices] going forward. This is an opportunity to grow, not a threat to us, especially in the short term."

I think this could be a very positive thing for them, and they are totally blowing it. As smartphones become more ubiquitous, people will use dedicated PNDs less and want nav apps more. That means companies like TomTom can stop paying all the costs associated with building hardware and charge even less for their downloadable apps. Do they do this? No. And I have no idea why. $100 is about what I'd pay for a dedicated PND, which I won't do, so what on earth makes them think that the same price will get me to spring for one on my phone? If they want to convert non-PND users, they need to lower the price in accordance with what it costs them. The only thing I like is their dedicated GPS mount with a USB pass-through. If it's not stupidly priced, I'll be buying that and using a cheaper Nav app... like xGPS. |
