The results of a new survey conducted last week indicate that the majority of Verizon
's current Android
users suffer from serious iPhone envy. Of those surveyed, 54 percent said they are very likely (25 percent) or somewhat likely (29 percent) to switch to Verizon's iPhone 4
when it goes on sale on February 10. But the real question is, how many AT&T
subscribers will flock to Verizon when February 10 rolls around?
Of the 700 smartphone users surveyed, more than a quarter -- 26 percent -- of current AT&T customers said they see Verizon in their future. Of those, 29 percent said they'll happily wait in line if they have to, "regardless of severe weather, product quirks, and service uncertainties."
That still leaves 47 percent of AT&T subscribers who said they are "very unlikely" to make the jump and 12 percent that are "somewhat unlikely" (another 15 percent wouldn't commit one way or the other). So what's holding them back? Are they content with AT&T, or is there another reason?
"When asked if learning details about Verizon's actual iPhone offering had led to second thoughts about switching, respondents cited the cost of conversion as the biggest concern (45 percent for AT&T customers, 41 percent for Verizon)," uSamp said. "AT&T customers had bigger fears than Verizon's about a potential decline in Verizon's service (25 percent for AT&T customers, 15 percent for Verizon). Both groups showed relatively equal concern about network speed (22 percent for AT&T customers, 26 percent for Verizon) as well as the risk of being first (19 percent for AT&T customers, 18 percent for Verizon). Despite these and other unknowns, 15 percent of AT&T customers reported having no second thoughts about switching, along with 25 percent of Verizon's current BlackBerry and Android users."
