Super Talent Announces World's First USB 3.0 RAIDDrive
USB Drives Support UAS Protocol to Attain Transfer Speeds up to 320MB/sec
San Jose, California - November 4, 2009 - Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 RAIDDrive, which supports transfer speeds up to ten times faster than USB 2.0 drives. The new drive, in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities, is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, but operates at slower speeds.The USB 3.0 RAIDDrive uses patented "multiple pairs of differential serial data lines technology" for optimal NAND flash performance. Measuring 95 x 37 x13.5 mm, the SuperSpeed drive is a truly portable drive. Like most USB drives, it requires no separate cable. It plugs directly into any USB port. Although this drive will work in USB 2.0, it delivers transfer speeds up to 200MB/sec only in USB 3.0 ports. Using a separate UAS Protocol driver with a USB 3.0 port this SuperSpeed drive can reach up to 320MB/sec transfer speeds. I'd give this one a "meh" if not for the USB 3.0 interface. Flash drive RAID arrays have been tried in the past (the Linux contingent will be pleased to know that it's possible under that OS), and generally the conclusion has been that the game was not worth the candle. If you buy high-enough-quality USB drives to get a decent transfer rate, you're throwing more money at the experiment than is really viable. Maybe matters have changed, and high-speed memory has been working its way into flash drives; but I'll wait to see the performance you get out of this unit (and the price as well) before adding to my already-burgeoning thumb drive collection. Of course, I'm not everyman, and chances are that someone out there needs 128 GB of storage in their pockets (and doesn't want to go the SSD or 2.5" mechanical hard drive route). Animators who work from home? Vain actors who want to carry HD copies of all their films with them at all times? Obsessive gamers who want all their games ready in case Thanksgiving dinner bogs down and they can sneak away to Mom's computer? |

I don't care much for the raid portion of this, what amazes me is how quick we now have an actually usb 3.0 product. Good Job to Super Talent. |
