Sony Revamps VAIO P Ultraportable: $800 With 1.6GHz Z530

Sony's VAIO P first surfaced at the front end of 2009, but the machine never really took off. Sony knew it was a niche product for a niche market, with an unusual form factor, and extraordinarily high resolution display, and not too much power under the hood. A full year went by, and a lot of other laptops have emerged. In the meanwhile, Sony has apparently seen fit to re-make the VAIO P in a fresher economic market, though not much looks to have changed.

Weighing 1.4lbs and shipping in five new wild colors (electric orange, neon green, hot pink, icy white and classic black), the new and improved VAIO P has new one-touch buttons, yet it still has an LCD with a crazy high resolution. Try 1600x768, all on an 8" ultra-wide display. There's also a built-in accelerometer that tilts the screen as the machine is tilted, and Sony also includes GPS and a digital compass. Wi-Fi and optional 3G WWAN can also be found, with Sony calling the new machine "smaller than a notebook and smarter than a smartphone."

It's available now for pre-sale at around $800, but it's hard to say how many people will be interested in paying this much for a system that includes a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 CPU. You probably won't be able to crank through 1080p video files here, and you'll probably find yourself squinting a lot. But hey, at least it looks swank!
