Seagate Joins DECE, The Organization Behind UltraViolet Cloud Storage

Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE). Ever heard of it? Probably not, but you may very well have heard of UltraViolet. DECE is the organization behind UltraViolet, which the entity describes as "a unique way to collect and enjoy movies and TV shows in the cloud." It's really nothing more than a fancy, cloud-friendly DRM for watching streaming movies, and outside of Apple, it has gobs of support from movie studios and most consumer companies. Now, you can add another name to that list: Seagate. DECE members include major Hollywood studios such as Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Fox Studios and Paramount Pictures as well as leading consumer electronics companies such as LG, Samsung, and Sony Electronics, but up until now, there really hasn't been a big name to join that focuses almost entirely on storage.

The same company that has been cranking out SSDs and HDDs for years is now a DECE member. It's not difficult to imagine why. With DVDs, CDs, Blu-ray Discs and USB sticks all slowing showing their age, it's pretty obvious that future media will be delivered via the cloud -- or perhaps, on NAND storage, HDDs or SSDs. Mark Teitell, general manager of UltraViolet, said the following: "As a DECE member, Seagate's expertise and perspective on cloud solutions and storage devices will help the organization continue to evolve these benefits."

Something tells us we may be hearing more about this partnership at CES.
