SanDisk Marches To Its Own Drum

Remember SanDisk’s new SlotMusic format that we told you about last month? Well, the world’s four largest music companies will begin shipping almost 40 music albums in this format this week. Additional albums are planned for the Christmas season.

Although we initially heard prices in the $7 - $10 range, recent news is saying a 1GB microSD memory card containing MP3 files will cost $14.99. Keep in mind, these tunes are DRM-free, so that’s a plus.

Best Buy will be getting their albums this week, while Walmart shoppers will have to wait another week or two. These retailers also carry the SanDisk Sansa-branded SlotMusic players, which start at about $20. There will also be artist-branded players that come with one of the artist’s albums on a 1GB microSD card.

The music industry and other backers are touting the new format’s simplicity and ease of use:
“With no need for computers or cords, the Sansa SlotMusic player gives consumers more time to play, and less time to worry about managing or downloading their music,” said Daniel Schreiber, SanDisk's senior VP/GM.

Each card comes with a USB reader as well, which, while handy, could become quite plentiful over time; can you imagine buying 15 albums and having 15 USB readers collecting dust on your desk?

The cards will store MP3 files at data rates up to 320Kbps and can also hold liner notes, album art, videos, and other fun content from the music companies. Since the cards will be 1GB in size, users can also add their own content to the cards.
