Although IFA doesn't kick off until next week, a few companies are spilling the beans on what's ahead... ahead of schedule. Samsung's joining that crowd, this week introducing the newest smartwatch
in its arsenal: the Gear S. While the display isn't round, it is gently curved to fit flush against your wrist, and overall, it looks pretty striking. There's a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display, but that's just the start. The real interesting nuggets are these: for starters, it runs Tizen instead of Android Wear. Secondly, there's a 3G modem inside, so that it's capable of handling basic calls, messages, and Internet activity even if your smartphone isn't nearby.
There's also a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radio, and the onscreen keyboard allows users to respond to messages without having the reach for one's phone. It's capable of switching seamlessly between its internal 3G radio and Bluetooth tethering connections, too. There's built-in GPS, support for Nike+ Running, and sensors within that'll track your health. Other specs include a dual-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a 300mAh Li-ion battery (good for around two days of use), an internal music player, an IP67-certified dust/water resistant chassis, USB 2.0, an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, heart rate monitor, and barometer.
In addition, Samsung's dishing the Gear Circle, which is a Bluetooth headset that wraps around the rear of your head. Both the Samsung Gear S and the Gear Circle will be available in global markets in phases through Samsung’s retail channels, e-commerce websites and via carriers beginning in October, but pricing remains under wraps at this point.
