Samsung Intros 640GB S2 And 2TB S3 External Hard Drives

If you've got a fever that can only be cured by more hard drive space, Samsung's your doctor. The megacorp has today unveiled two new additions to its S Series external hard drive range over at IFA in Germany, and both go above and beyond the call of duty in terms of capacity.

Both the 3.5" 2TB S3 Station and the 640GB 2.5" S2 portable made their debut today on the big stage, with each stepping up their respective games in terms of gigabytes. The 640GB device really takes a big leap forward given that it's  2.5" drive in a bus-powered enclosure; previously you were pretty much stuck at 500GB regardless of manufacturer. According to Samsung, the 640GB S2 can store data equivalent to 128,000 digital images, 160,000 MP3 music files, or 77 hours of high definition movies. In other words, you shouldn't need another on-the-go drive for quite some time after snagging this.

The 2TB S3 Station sounds a bit less amazing given the amount of 2TB drives already out there, but we certainly won't complain about competition bringing prices down. Both new hard drives offer the same security features in other S2 Portable and S1 Mini drives, such as Auto Backup, SecretZone, and SafetyKey. The 640GB S2 Portable is available in September and the S3 Station will be available early next year, though prices aren't yet available for either.
