R.I.P. TorrentSpy

The end of an era may be upon us as yet another major BitTorrent site has closed down:

Friends of TorrentSpy,

We have decided on our own, not due to any court order or agreement, to bring the Torrentspy.com search engine to an end and thus we permanently closed down worldwide on March 24, 2008.

The legal climate in the USA for copyright, privacy of search requests, and links to torrent files in search results is simply too hostile. We spent the last two years, and hundreds of thousands of dollars, defending the rights of our users and ourselves.

Ultimately the Court demanded actions that in our view were inconsistent with our privacy policy, traditional court rules, and International law; therefore, we now feel compelled to provide the ultimate method of privacy protection for our users - permanent shutdown.

It was a wild ride,

The TorrentSpy Team

For me it's been gone a year, it was shut down in Europe long before America. It's a shame really. I used to think it was the best one out there. Now it's just Pirate Bay for me.

Good thing there are still other sites similar to Torrentspy.

Yep, torrentspy used to be a good website, although I could not use it for the past year as well. Now Mininova or PiratesBay is good. Also YouTorrent!

Its just going to be the nature of torrenting sites/P2P -- for every ONE site/app that closes its doors there will be about 3 that open them up. I can guarentee you that some programmer from the U.S. read this and thought "oh man people are going to want an alternative -- maybe I can program the next greatest thing!"

Napster started it all and now we literally have thousands of places that torrents/downloads can take place....its never going to just go away folks :p

Youtorrent just searches a bunch of sites you tell it to, nothing wrong with that. its the sites that you torrent searches that have to be on the lookout..

Indeed, TorrentSpy has already been out of commission for quite some time, but there are many other similar sites that are willing and able to take its place. Some of my favorites are; The Pirate Bay, mininova, Meganova, IsoHunt, TorrentBox and for anime; TokyoToshokan, BoxTorrents, datorrents, scarywater and for the ULTIMATE in NSFW; PureTnA.< If you don't already know about this gem, then you can thank me in advance for this one lads.

Still it is a shame to see any torrent site shut down due to government strong arm tactics.

TorrentSpy was my main torrent site for a long time.  Once they stopped servicing America, I just google search "xy torrent" instead of using a regular site.  Works great, but I have missed and will continue to miss TorrentSpy.  RIP.  BitTorrenting, fortunately, will never die.  Long live free stuff!
