Parrot Bebop Drone Lets You Experience Flight With Oculus Rift

You surely know about Parrot and its drone quadricopters, but the company is releasing a new version called the Bebop that comes loaded with impressive features, including the ability to experience POV flight via the drone’s HD camera and an Oculus Rift headset.

(Incidentally, we sort of did the same thing with a Nokia Lumia 1020 and a different Parrot drone. Fun stuff.)

Parrot Bebop

The Bebop comes equipped with a 14MP Full HD fisheye lens camera with 3-axis image stabilization and horizontal curve correction, and if you connect an Oculus Rift headset to the optional Skycontroller that controls the Bebop, you can see what the drone’s camera sees. You can even pan the camera by moving your head.

Other features of the Bebop include 802.11ac MIMO WiFi; multiple sensors including an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, ultrasound, and pressure sensor; and GPS, GLONASS, and GALILEO.

Absent a Skycontroller, you can fly the Bebop using an iOS or Android app called FreeFlight 3.0 that includes controls such as virtual on-screen joysticks and movements performed by tilting the tablet or smartphone you’re using.

Parrot hasn’t released a price for the Bebop yet, but the drone and the Skycontroller will both be available in Q4 of this year.

Interesting, but I don't see this taking off. It seems much too novel.
