Paradigm Shift Unveils Two Color E-Readers For Under $200

Color e-ink remains a holy grail of sorts within the e-reader industry. There's still no company out there that is producing market-ready readers with a color e-ink screen, mostly because the technology just isn't advanced enough to be created cheaply. That little fact isn't stopping Paradigm Shift from touting a new pair of color readers at the Consumer Electronics Show, and it's also hoping to have them available for sale in the US shortly.

What won't be happening is the unveiling of the first color e-ink e-readers for sale; what you will see are two new readers with color LCD displays, which will obviously have a more serious impact on battery life. The trade off involves less battery life for a color display, which we're guessing some will be happy to take. Not everyone needs a reader that can last 24 hours on a single charge, and it's definitely easier (and more enjoyable) to read a color display.

The first reader is the 5" EER-051, which features support for a full gamut of e-book formats (ANSI, TXT, DOC, PDF, HTML, EPUB, etc.), and there's also an integrated MP3 player and photo viewer. This one includes 1GB of storage and an SD expansion slot, and the $149.95 price tag is definitely less than most e-ink-based competitors. The second one is the 7" EER-071WF, which boasts a 7" high-res display, extended battery life, integrated WiFi and Windows CE. The OS includes the same e-book support, but it adds support for Excel files, MP3 files, Word documents and Flash video. There's also 2GB of internal storage and a T-Flash expansion slot, but you'll have to pay $199.99 for the upgrades.

Integrated mp3 player? Photo viewer? Color LCD display? Flash video player? Word & Excel support?

Why do we have 5 things that do the same thing but have different names? This thing is more a tablet than an e-reader.

It looks nice, but is an only 5 inch screen big enough?

Battery constraints might have had something to do with it. Color LCD's take alot more juice than Amazon's e-ink.

I agree though, 5 inch is too small, even 6 inches is pushing it.

They have a 7" one for $200, but I'd like to see the 7" for 150 and 8.5~9" for 200 personally.

Still a better value than the Kindle which only has a 6 inch e-ink black & white screen, vs a 7 inch color screen.
