Ostendo Demos Three Panel Surround Vision Gaming Geek Nirvana At CES
The Ostendo CRVD display offers a 43" diagonal viewing area with a 32:10 aspect ratio that literally wraps around your field of view, capturing more of your peripheral vision, especially when multiple panels are chained together.
Though Ostendo CRVD panels have been around for a while now, in the upper press briefing rooms of AMD's spread at CES, Ostendo had married not one but three of their CRVD Curved Displays up with a proverbial bad-ass gaming system built in a Thermaltake Level 10 case. Employing AMD Eyefinity technology with a Radeon HD 5870 graphics card pushing the pixels, the effect was completely "immersive" in the words of Ostendo Director of Marketing, Erhan Ercan. We'd have to agree, hit the play below button and kick your feet up...
AMD Eyefinity, dressed to kill in a Thermaltake Level 10, drove the three CRVD displays like butter.

The ironic thing is that buying those three monitors for a racing set-up costs the same amount as a 2010 Camaro. This is the third year they've shown them off at CES. Are they going to put them back in the closet until next year, or will they actually start shipping them via AlienWare and NEC? I was really interested when they were first announced, but now it's reached the point where it seems we're just being teased with a monitor that priced ungodly high and is not really available even if you were willing to spend the cash. NEC's page says they'll be available in "May of 2009" for $8k each: http://www.necdisplay.com/newtechnologies/curveddisplay/, but as far as I can tell it never happened. By the time these guys realize how many they could have sold at a more realistic price, they'll be beat to the punch by someone like Apple. |

Too bad that price isn't for three! That does look like a pretty amazing driving experience. Desktop navigation would seem a bit odd though. |

On this note but not specifically with this particular hardware I wonder where graphics is going. DX11 and other platforms available are ready for another big jump like DX9 caused. I just wonder where it's going to go. I also wonder when we're going to get some OLED monitors on the market from all the manufacturers as well. I still wanna see the holo display, although it is being developed for the military etc, I am sure it is quite a ways off for the normal user. We will see it though sooner or most likely later. |

I agree with 3vi1, as I have been watching these since they hit as well, not this year last year, they may have even been around longer. Either way one of these would be awesome 3 would be absolute overkill. Not that I would turn it down. Either way just one of these would be entirely out of this world, but 8k each wow not gonna happen. That refresh rate is also astronomically beautiful. |

It seems like each monitor is made up of like 4 smaller screens. And the colors don't quite seem to blend. Or maybe it's the backlighting that doesn't quite even out just right. Might just be a glare causing that effect... but do you guys see what i'm talking about? lol |

Yes - there are three lines where the projectors overlap. They said that would be fixed in the second half of 2008, but it's obviously still there in the video. |

Good to know I was't the only one to see it. The alone would ruin it for me. lol Now that you mention projectors... Is it just a bunch of pico projectors or something over lapping? Hmmm... gives me an idea for a project i'd like to try... but I don't have the monies lol Just take 3 high quality widescreen projectors and blast the images onto 3 huge screens around you with the projectors hanging over head lol.... That would be far more immersive than this lol |

The CRVD is based off of micro-projectors which are all directed to the "sweet spot", right down in front of the display. Off-angle viewing shows off the lines, but when you're sitting in front of it and using it, the lines go away. |

Either way having one of these monitors for your general desktop would be a truly awesome edition to a PC especially for gaming. I could see a monitor like this being very useful in a lot of professional situations as well. Think about Cad work or accounting, data tracking, network administration, Logistics and any number of professional or artistic design scenarios. |

I hope these become cheaper or something like them I so like this versus independent monitors. |
