Oneiric Ocelot (Ubuntu 11.10) Launching October 13th In A Shroud Of Mystery

Lion and Windows 8 may be stealing their share (and then some) of the spotlight, but that's not to say that other operating systems are just sitting on their laurels. Ubuntu, perhaps the most popular flavor of Linux for the consumer world, is about to release their newest version. Oneiric Ocelot is on the edge of launch, with Ubuntu 11.10 arriving October 13th.

What's interesting about this upcoming launch is just how much effort is going into promoting is, and moreover, shrouding it in mystery. A new teaser site has launched with the sole purpose of getting you interested in Ubuntu, with "a whole new world" and "a whole new computer" promised. There are no details on what v11.10 will bring, but with that kind of tag line, even the non-Linux fans should take notice.

I haven't used Ubuntu since about 2006 or 2007 but this is interesting to me. I'm looking forward to learning more about the features, hopefully they will tell us something!

Maybe some folks will take notice and give Linux the attention it deserves, can't knock them for presenting the anticipation ,mystery countdown & ...tick ...tick...

Pretty cool stuff going on a bit lately with Denusa for some improved gaming in Linux these days too.>> MSE Google fiasco 's no problem !

Actually looking forward the the release of 11.10 this time.& very likely to spend a lot more time using Ocelot than the Win 8 Preview which I have installed along side Win 7 and 2 other Linux installs on the same HD..probably just 'refresh' the Grub boot loader and make some room in time for the release..Either way ,getting some hands - on with the 11.10 Ocelot is definitely something  for me.and looking forward to what new features it has.

I want to build or upgrade an old computer into a decent linux box just so I can explore the system a little and see what linux has to offer, I've used Windows all my life and use Mac's on a daily basis but linux is unexplored territory for me

Considering all the effort into marketing 11.10 to the public, im guessing the latest version of linux will be even more user friendly than the last release that I heard a lot about (maverick meerkat or lucid lynx I believe?)

Can't Wait!

@Manduh Ubuntu has come a long way since 2006/2007

I love Ubuntu personally and especially for folks who only use it for the internet and e-mail etc. I often recommend it even long time users of Windows I usually never see their machine again for viruses or problems.

This article isn't right... there's no teaser site or anything like that? The Ubuntu website looks fairly normal, I've never seen that banner saying "A whole new computer" anywhere... there's not even a link to the supposed site...
