Nokia Doing Away With Ovi Branding As WP7 Transition Continues

The times are a-changing, and so is Nokia. Nokia isn't and never will be the company we've grown to know and love. With the Windows Phone 7 link, the company is remarking itself day by day, and one of the ways it's doing just that is by shedding Symbian as well as other mainstays to the OS. Like Ovi. The company just announced that Nokia will be getting rid of the Ovi brand moving forward. The rebranding is a part of the greater Nokia transition, and that's expected to continue until 2012.

Each of the services under the Ovi umbrella will simply be rebranded as Nokia, with no planned disruption to the service roadmaps. The transition from Ovi to Nokia will begin in July this year, with the intention of it being completed across all countries and all services by the end of 2012. It’s likely that anybody buying a new Nokia smartphone or mobile phone later this year will start to see the new branding on services included within. However anybody already owning a Nokia phone will see this new rebranding through future software updates.

Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? No, but it shows that Nokia's shedding almost everything, right down to Ovi, to make room for the impending WP7 takeover. Kind of bittersweet, really.
