Neil Armstrong, World's First Moonwalker, Passes Away

While space and intergalactic travel may not be our typical beat, there's no denying the impact of Neil Armstrong on the world of technology. The fact is, technology is one of the main drivers of all space operations, and without an incredible amount of the stuff, no spaceship would have ever left our atmosphere. Unfortunately, Mr. Armstrong passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy that will never fade. The man has already made history books, and that's most certainly where he will remain. Neil is best known as being the first man to ever walk on the moon, and his passing at the page of 82 is certainly a tough one to swallow in the wake of the incredible success of Mars Rover Curiosity. Without Neil's success, it's hard to say if things like Curiosity would have ever stood a chance.


According to NBC, which extracted a statement from his family, his death following "complications from heart-bypass surgery he underwent this month." It's a sad weekend in the space and science community, and it seems fitting to simply end with the quote that'll live forever as Neil's own: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." - Neil Armstrong, July 20, 1969.

What a great achievement for mankind that was. Its sad but he lived his kife ti the fullestm my condolences to the friends and family of neil armstrong. You will be in my prayers.

One of the best things you can do for yourself, and humankind, is leave a legacy for yourself that will positively affect people after you are gone.

Not a bad legacy, such as being a tyrant.

But a good legacy, such as the one that this man left behind.

He truly changed the world,

Kidbest100; I really think you said it best. oh and NKR you misstated your quote, it is "One Small step for man, a giant leap for mankind" if you change the words you are not to put it in quote marks as no one cares what you said and that quote is by Neil Armstong and he did not say humankind ;p

He came and spoke at my work (Rockwell International Space Division) a few times. I was always impressed by his hanging around afterwards to talk to us one to one. He turned a 15 to 20 minute speaking engagement into hours of conversation with all of us workers.

He was always very interested in the work that we were doing building the Space Shuttle Orbiters, and he asked some very intelligent questions while touring our facilities.

He lived a life that most of us can only dream about, yet he was a well grounded and friendly guy.

RIP Mr. Armstrong.
