Most DDoS Attacks Originate From China, Says Report

A company that protects against DDoS attacks, Prolexic Technologies, released its attack report for Q3 2011. There’s a lot to the report, including that Prolexic mitigated what it claims is the largest event in 2011 (in terms of packet-per-second volume). That attack occurred between November 5-12 and, according to Prolexic, portends the increasing scale and complexity of DDoS attacks.

Indeed, the report shows that DDoS attacks are increasing in terms of bandwidth (up 66% from Q3 2010) and packets-per-second, which is up nearly four-fold from the same time period a year ago.


What is perhaps most notable, however, is where the attacks are coming from. The report found that China was the biggest offender, responsible for over half (55%) of all DDoS attacks. For perspective, number two on the list is India, with 8.69% of the attacks.

Further, China is responsible for most of the botnets being sent out; it’s the country of origin for the two largest ASNs. One accounts for 43.88% of them, and the other 21.79%. Again, for perspective, the third-largest botnet is from Turkey and gobbles up just 9%.

Not so much Communism as a combination of censorship (preventing people from getting news about how to protect against viruses and trojans, as a major side effect) and a hostile attitude towards the West, such that attacks going *out* of China are ignored, but incoming attacks are firewalled almost immediately.

As a former hosting service provider, I have plenty of experience with China. I found the best way to handle them was to null-route any IP space assigned to China.

Does this really surprise anyone here. There population density is high and that region is where many viruses etc originate from. Keep on trucking.

Hardly surprising, given the large number of computers in China and the fact that, according to StatCounter (http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser_version-CN-daily-20080701-20111122), the use of very insecure browsers there remains extensive. As regards a «hostile attitude towards the West» (however this rather ambiguous region may be defined), I should suggest, based on my own experience in China, that it is not nearly so hostile as that of the attitude of many people in North America (in particular) and Europe towards China....

Not surprising in the least bit... China is both the most restricted and the most prominent when it comes to the internet and tecnology... Most of the games out there that took mere minutes to produce come from China, most of the major attacks come from China, hell most of the tools used in attacks come out of China; what's interesting is how they can have so many technically proficient people while we over in the US barely have any... I guess China must be educating them about computers in their schools.

Again, not surprising.
