Blink twice and take a deep breath; there’s more to mention from Apple
’s big press event today besides the iPad mini
, next-gen iPad, and iMac revamp. There’s a new MacBook Pro
on the block, and it’s a 13-inch model sporting a Retina display.
Under the hood, the new slim and trim (measuring 0.75 inches thick and 3.57 pounds) MBP sports 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 or 2.6GHz Core i7 processors, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 8Gb of DDR3-1600MHz memory, and up to 768GB of flash storage. There’s a FaceTime HD camera with dual microphones, and I/O ports include a pair of Thunderbolt ports, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and a MagSafe 2 power port. For connectivity, the MacBook Pro features three-stream 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.
Power Nap--which keeps apps such as Mail, Contacts, and Calendar up to date even while the display is asleep and the machine is plugged in--is on board, and Apple says the computer can handle up to 30 days on standby or 7 hours of use on a battery charge.
A Core i5 version of the new 13-inch MacBook Pro will cost $1,699 with 128GB of flash storage or $1,999 with 256GB. Obviously, a scaled-up edition sporting the Core i7 chip and up to 768GB of flash storage will incur a scaled-up price.
Apple has also updated the adorable Mac mini
. New Mac minis, which measure just 7.7 inches square and 1.4 inches thick will feature a new dual-core Intel Core i5 (2.5Ghz/3.1GHz Turbo) or quad-core Core i7 (2.3GHz/3.3GHz Turbo) processors with integrated graphics for up to double the previous generations’ performance, up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM (4GB standard). Ports include Thunderbolt, HDMI, SDXC, FireWire 800, four USB 3.0 ports, and Gigabit Ethernet. Storage options include up to a 1TB hard drive or 256GB SSD.
The Mac mini ships with OS X Mountain Lion, the Notification Center, Game Center, Gatekeeper, iCloud integration, and more. The lowest-end Mac mini (2.5GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD) will cost $599, while $999 gets you a mini running the Core i7 chip, 4GB of memory, dual 1TB hard drives, and Mac OS X Server.
Both the 13-inch MacBook Pros and new Mac minis are available now.
