Mitsubishi Ceasing Production Of Rear-Projection HDTVs
Despite the fact that CES 2013 looks to be a showcase event for 4K HDTVs, Mitsubishi has decided to pull out of its rear-projection TV business, right around a year after tossing its ambitions aside in the LCD business. The statement from the company is as follows:
"This decision has been an extremely difficult one as it deeply impacts our loyal employee, customers, dealers and vendors. But the introduction of our competitors larger flat panel products and, more important, the severe price competition across the industry, has made it increasingly difficult to remain profitable. We can no longer sustain our business in its current form. Therefore, we'll no longer manufacture and sell our DLP rear projection televisions in the US. We'll focus our US operations exclusively on our professional grade visual solutions products, including projectors, printers, data wall products and display monitors. Our existing customer relations and parts and services departments will remain in place along with existing authorized service centers."
One has to wonder how many TV makers can survive with margins so thin. Will 2013 be the year of streamlining in the business? Perhaps a few mergers along the way? Or, maybe this is just the opportunity Apple needed to overshadow everyone who is exiting with a true Apple TV. (One can dream, right?)

I was actually just looking around on cragilist to see what TV's were going for. Thinking I might be able to pick up a steal, I ran across a large amount of people selling these mitsubishi DLP's for some high dollars. Personally, I think DLP's still have some life in them. I personally would have bought one if they had been a bit lower in price, but I guess there was a reason they were priced "high" after all.. |

I can't see an Apple TV "overshadowing everyone" just because of their price point. In their desktops, laptops and mobile products there the quality appeal, and fluiditiy of UI's but in TV's there's plenty of quality to go around and and chiq, or intuitive UI isn't a major selling point for a TV in most cases anyways. Never doubt fan boys would jump on an Apple TV regardless though. The problem with DLP's was even though they had a few advantages, they were just huge and bulky and didn't follow the trend of sexy and thin that's been the precedent for nearly every device over the past couple of years, plus they weren't competitive enough price wise. @Kidbest100 I'm pretty sure AMD isn't "out" of they CPU market... they're still releasing and selling new CPU's, and I'm not to sure about Nvidia "dominating" GPU markets either |
OSunday, AMD has literally came out and said they were stepping out of the CPU market and moving into the mobile cpu market (Late 2011). While I have actually seen this happen, it is probably coming soon unless steam roller does as good as I think (hope) it will. Also, Nvidia is completely dominating the GPU market. Not just the CPU enthusiast market, but every other possible market where a GPU is required as well. The Nvidia tesla is used in nearly every supercomputer built in the past few years, the Nvidia Quadro series is used in every high-end workstation (90% to be exact), and they own every major contract out there with every major computer manufacturer. That's very true, I didn't think of things outside the scope of gaming desktops and self PC builders. Although that article is a year old and didn't outright state it graphically though, considering the posts we've seen about AMD's financial struggles I guess that may be the case after all. This is why those recent posts confused me so much, I didn't understand where the losses were coming from since I personally know and see a ton of people buying and using AMD products, although like I said earlier my knowledge has been limited to gamers and system builders, I guess we're a sort of niche category compared to every other device with a CPU and GPU

Man, I didn't know it either until about 6 months ago. For a brief period I worked in purchasing for parts used to repair medical devices. After a few orders came through for workstations, I started troubleshooting with the tech's over the phone. After a while I started thinking to myself,"Does Nvidia have GPU's in every major workstation?". The more I looked the more I found, to this day I haven't seen a work station without an Nvidia GPU in it. It's crazy man. |

So a buddy of mine just recently picked up a 46" LCD to replace his 55" DLP. He's literally having problems giving it a way for free. If he can't giveaway a DLP, it makes sense that mitsubushi couldn't sell one. |

It's an HD DLP right? Because it was given to my family as a Christmas gift by my Grandmother and the people at Walmart ripped her off and told her this was her best option since we weren't planning on getting HD Channels from Cable or Satellite and it would save her $100 that an HD Capable TV would be useless. I'm not even sure whether the intent was malicious to take advantage of someone who didn't know better to make a sale and a product that wasn't selling or if the person who helped her was just plain stupid. I was only 12 at the time so I wasn't in a position to know any better or be able to make difference anyhow. |
