Microsoft Sells 100 Million Copies Of Windows 7--Next Up, World Domination

Same story, new week. But this time, Microsoft has some pretty big numbers to back up the boasting. And by "pretty big," we really mean "huge." There was already little doubt that Windows 7 was on track to become bigger than Vista could ever dream of becoming, and while the OS was already the company's best selling of all time, no one knew exactly how long it would take to cross the magical 100 million mark.

This week, the Redmond-based software giant has proudly announced that the mark has been surpassed, with Windows 7 now installed in one of every 10 PCs in the entire world. Just take a step back and let that sink in. For every 10 PCs in the world, Windows 7 is on one. Not even a full year after launching during a recession. That's pretty monumental.

Microsoft already announced crushing Q3 financial figures, noting that Win7 was a huge driver. Now we know exactly how huge. So, who's adopting so early? Mostly business users, but loads of consumers are also jumping on-board. Some say that Vista's shortcomings have actually helped Windows 7 sell, but either way, we're sure Microsoft isn't complaining about the motives behind it. Onward and upward, as they say.

This is kind of funny when considering Apple; which seems to get all the news as of late, is comprised of less than from what I understand 10% of the world's PC's. To help you understand what I am saying here "which you probably already do", Windows 7 alone has more usage than Apple's complete line of PC, and it is barely if half a year old.

Apple seems to be that popular kid in high school. Everyone pays attention to them, many in society "students", think there the coolest thing since sliced bread. However; when they get out of high school, and out of daddies house, there accomplishments don't really amount to much. This is because the nerd's "M$, Google, HP etc etc", in reality still own the market "successful", considerably more than the politician caught with his pants down at some point "grown up cool kid, IE Apple". Not to mention the nerds devices/accomplishments see a much wider, and valid market place world wide!

I just hope they never let another debacle like Vista roll off the assembly line. It is this reason I like Apple because they"MADE" Microsoft produce a better OS. I think Microsoft rested on their laurels and thought they were to big to fail as we say about the banking system, well the people who switched to Snow Leopard brought Microsoft down to earth quickly.

This is why competition is good for us all, everyone stays in check!!!!!!!!!!

There is a reason why television is so mindlessly dull and insipid: It's tailored for the masses. Just like Windows. Just because so many people take the blue pill (or it is the red one?) doesn't mean that it is a good or even reasonable idea. With such a great, stable, secure, user-friendly OS as Ubuntu around (not going to get into the Apple fray, even though I could be classified as at least somewhat of a fanboy), there is just no reason to use Windows (except gaming, perhaps). That so many people are ignorant of this and go out and buy Windows boxes or use IE is not an endorsement of the quality of the OS. It's an indictment of the ignorance of the masses.

People use windows because it is what they are most comfortable and familiar with. And there are plenty of reasons to use windows, besides gaming.

Have you yourself used Windows 7?

So if Apple is the cool kid and Windows is the nerds, who is Ubuntu? And it appears not much has changed since high school... these guys still don't really talk to each other ; - )

Actually Apple is the cool kid, Ubuntu is the nerd, and Windows is the middle masses.

Yeah... funny how Microsoft starts a news blitz on things we already knew just as Ubuntu 10.04 is released, eh? Where's the story/review on that?

Who really uses Apple for anything other than play! They just like to tout themselves as the cool kids. When nobody is playing with you then you still have to tell yourself that your still cool!

And what is Ubuntu! Never heard of it :P I don't think I want my OS software from Africa. Although they can still be Tri-Lambs

When Microsoft works, then it is the Nerd and the cool kid! When it doesn't it gets pushed back to the middle Masses.

So since I just placed my Win7Pro order today, I can stand in front of Adams with Lewis and say "I am a Nerd!"

>> And what is Ubuntu! Never heard of it :P

My point exactly. It seems as if you have to charge $200 for an OS and give people free copies to get reviews.

Ubuntu & Kubuntu (my preference) 10.04 are long-term-support, major release versions.  They're the most popular versions of Linux and just as functional as Windows, but when has a new version of Windows been released without even a news blurb on PC sites?.

>> I don't think I want my OS software from Africa.

It's not. Canonical is headquartered in Europe, the kernel direction is controlled by Linus in California (originally from Finland), and the contents of the *buntu distros are developed internationally.

HA! Gotcha!.... Whos Evil :)

I know what Ubuntu is, I just wanted to see how many I could get a reaction out of :P

And yes I know its not made in Africa, I just wanted to see who felt the connected state of being and understood the openness of the Philosophy in relation to the software :)

I have used Unix and Linux before. The only reason I don't use it is that most of my programs are based in Windows. I would need a programmer to get them supported on other Os's. I am not good when it comes to scripting, unless it is a movie script :P I even have a difficult time in Mel scripting for Maya.

Just give me the buttons I need to do what I need to! Yet, I am not so mindless that I need an Apple OS.

Hehe - actually, I knew you were being sarcastic when you said "Who uses Apple for anything other than play!" Being an animator, I was sure you were familiar with its dominating multimedia presence.

But, you gave me a great opening to throw out my views on the misconceptions you were stereotyping. So, thanks!
