Microsoft Announces 64GB Zune HD

Microsoft plans to launch a 64GB version of its Zune HD on April 12th via the Zune online store. With this new model, Microsoft claims you'll be able to store up to 16,000 songs or 20 hours of high definition video on the media player. With the announcement of the new model, Microsoft is also lowering the estimated retail price for the 16GB and 32GB models by $20, making them $199.99 and $269.99, respectively.

Microsoft also mentioned a v4.5 firmware update that will add the ability to browse, stream, and acquire music from Zune Marketplace on your TV; Smart DJ auto-playlists; and expanded codec support. Unfortunately, the company didn't give us a release date, only saying more news about the availability of the 4.5 firmware will be available in the coming days.

We’re excited to share that Zune fans will be able to purchase a new 64GB version of the popular Zune HD device for $349.99 starting April 12th through ZuneOriginals.com. By increasing the Zune HD capacity to 64GB, users will be able take up to 16,000 songs, or 20 hours of high definition video from Zune Marketplace, or 25,000 pictures* on the go! Customers will be able to customize their Zune HD 64GB through ZuneOrginals.com, available in their choice of Platinum, Black, Blue, Red, Green, Purple and Magenta colors.

In addition to introducing the new 64GB capacity, we are also reducing the prices of the 16GB and 32GB devices. Starting today, new price lists are being distributed bringing the estimated retail price (ERP) for the Zune 16GB device to $199.99 and the Zune HD 32GB device to $269.99.

With its OLED multi-touch screen, built-in HD radio, HD video out capabilities and Internet browser, Zune HD is a full-function media player which has received accolades from press and consumers. We’ve also announced details of an upcoming firmware update which will add even more features to the device, such as Smart DJ auto-playlists capability directly on the Zune HD, ability to browse, stream and acquire music from Zune Marketplace on your TV (while the device is connected to a TV set through the A/V dock) and expanded codec support allowing users to play more video formats natively from the device.

We are excited to be offering a great range of storage capacities for the Zune HD at competitive price points and will be sharing more news on the availability of the 4.5 firmware in the coming days.

*Music estimates based on 128 Kbps WMA files with length of 4 minutes each. Pictures transferred to Zune will be optimized for Zune screen size; video estimates based on 500 Kbps WMV files with 128 Kbps WMA audio tracks.

I have always wanted a Zune as the graphics should be superior to the I-touch, I just was hesitant because of the hidden charges I heard about. I don't know how the interface is I would hope it is as smooth as the I-touch. Again I give Apple credit they really set the standard for what a Mobile Internet Device should be.

That OLED multi-touch screen looks really nice.

I'm not sure, but I think I saw that one of the Target stores around me had a Zune on display. It would give you a chance to get a feel for the interface, unless they are overhauling it in the new firmware (which I doubt).

Microsoft has traditionally been the bastion of DRM and proprietary formats.  Simply for that reason, the Zune's the last player I would buy given any reasonable alternatives.

Hey thanks RyuGTX I might have to go check it out. I went to Best-Buy a few months back but they were not out on display at the time. Yea with Nvidia providing Tegra for the graphics plus as you said the OLED screen it should look gorgeous that is why I wanted to witness it in person.

I recently picked up a Zune 16 GB (they didn't have any 32 GB ones in stock, and I'm not from the US of A). What I really want is proper XNA 4.0 support. Instead, MS has pretty much said that if you want to make something for the Zune, you're stuck to XNA 3.1. Boo-urns to that, I say!

Gents, any issue with the dreaded page refresh wiping out comments that you have in the works? We tweaked a few things. We just want the best user experience possible.

Cool!  I'll test it out against an instance of IE later when I'm on Windows (Firefox always kept/re-entered the forms on page reload).

Why yes Dave, It just happened to me only a few minutes ago on the thread concerning Sprint's new money back guarantee on their service. It's happened several times in the last month or so.

It's a frustrating problem and I can't remember to always right click and copy what I have written at intervals. I opened Word to make my responses one day and then pasted them into the forums, but that's a PITA.

Thanks for working on fixing it for us.

I have a 160GBVideo iPod and that's good enough for me. There's 10 movies on it and Lord knows how many songs on it too.

Everything I've read about the Zune has been underwhelming at best. Reviews leave me sleeping at my station. I'll follow the crowd this time and pass on it.

Thanks again Dave, I just started to right click and copy as I wrote a few lines of text. If I get wiped out,,no prob just right click paste. Smile

Seriously, Does anyone know anyone who owns a Zune?

If they receive all these accolades and are popular, then you would think that someone In your circle would own one? Outside of Washington state.

Also, you can only browse the Internet when connected to a TV? which I would guess have to be connected to a wireless network to your PC?

At roughly the same price as the Touch. They really need to step it up! If this thing operated in absolute open conjunction with Windows? Had WI-MaxG4 capabilities (standard) and Blutooth, Then maybe! Or maybe a phone version? If this thing was also able to operate as an HD 1080p media device for Big screens, and more importantly as a Home Theatre Remote control!! Then it would be a possibility! We know the tech is there, so its not to much to ask for. Especially if you are trying to topple the Apple empire?

Phone version? In the works. Just what do you think Windows Phone 7 is?
