Magellan Introduces RoadMate App For iPhone

iPhone users now have another GPS option for their phones. Magellan GPS recently announced the Magellan RoadMate App for iPhone for the United States and Puerto Rico. The app uses the same interface as the company's dedicated personal navigation devices.

Feature highlights include:
  • Spoken street name guidance
  • Highway lane assist
  • In-app music control
  • iPhone address book integration
  • Pedestrian Mode
  • Most current maps provided by NAVTEQ

The Magellan RoadMate App does not have any recurring subscription fees and is available for use on the iPod touch (2nd generation) with the Magellan Premium Car Kit (sold separately). The app is available at an introductory price of $39.99.

Wow, that is a great price!  You basically pay for the interface when it comes to a gps.  Iphone users with Magellan gps's must be furious about now.

Unfortunately, you can buy a cheap TomTom for the same price as the Magellan Premium Car Kit. Still, I guess it's a good option if you already have an iPhone.

I think this is a great move on Magellan's part. It is basically expanding your customers by offering a product line. They can capture iPhone users along with people who want a dedicated GPS. The thing to remember is that not everyone has an iPhone or wants to pay for one. In a sense, they are competing in the GPS market and the Apple app market.

They aren't loosing anything really, they don't have to make the hardware just the interface that they already had so its all good for them :) lol

Sounds Amazing, however, seems that the speed indicator may be off a bit. If you look at the first picture shown, it references the users speed at 109mph!

Yeah? Aint that Right!

Like you can really do 109MPH on the 10 :O

At least not around the 10/101 interchange, we all know that between the 5 and 405 there are way to many spots that congest. Although I have tried, you can get up to about 90 maybe at around 1AM with no traffic and you know where the potholes are and no cops :)

This is the type of app I have been waiting for, in my decision of getting a smart phone. now I just hope they port it over to the other phones! Although something like this, might actually make me upgrade to a Ipod touch.
