Mageia Linux Launched, Free and Open Source For Desktops and Servers

Two and half years ago, Mageia was forked off of Mandriva Linux, and the group behind it put out stable releases in June 2011 and May 2012; now, Mageia 3 is available for download for desktops and servers.

Mageia 3 is the work of more than 100 people worldwide, and the distro’s features include kernel 3.8, GRUB as the default bootloader, sytemd 195, KDE 4.10.2, GNOME 3.6, Xfce 4.10, Libreoffice 4.0.3, and updates to RPM 4.11 and urpmi.

However, the most attractive new feature for many users has to be Steam for Linux, which is available in the repositories.

We haven’t take Mageia for a spin ourselves, but it’s encouraging to see good progress on a Linux distro, and the screenshots surely look hot. You can download Mageia 3 for free here.

You know with the way Microsoft is going with windows 8 this might just be the break a good linux distro needs to convert a bunch of people.

Especially if they can get some way to make games work properly on linux.

They've been making a lot of headway with Steam's support beginning not too long ago. Head over to Steam to see how many games are supported now.

I'm downloading this distro now.

People don't understand...pretty much any windows software can run under linux "IF" you have all the dependencies and configured properly. it's a matter of figuring all that out.
