Lenovo's Thin and Light ThinkPad T431s Ultrabook Means Business

Lenovo pretty much nailed the thin and light Ultrabook form factor with its ThinkPad X1 Carbon, which we gave an Editor's Choice award last summer, but what about the enterprise crowd? For business users, Lenovo just launched its ThinkPat T431s Ultrabook with design enhancements the company claims were "inspired by the results of an extensive global research project." As a result, this is the thinnest and lightest T series ever made.

The ThinkPad T431s sports a carbon fiber top cover and magnesium exterior. It weighs a mere 3.6 pounds and measures a scant 0.82 inches thick (20.6mm), which means it's not going to slow you down during your travels. On the inside, it has a new, larger multi-touch glass surface trackpad with 5-button click functionality and an "incredibly thin" bezel surrounding the 14-inch HD+ display (1600x900 resolution). Lenovo further updated the ThinkPad precision keyboard by improving key placement while maintaining shortcuts, the company says.

Sleek and sexy, Lenovo's ThinkPad T431s is also a performer, at least on paper. It features 3rd Generation Intel Core i5/i7 (Ivy Bridge) processor options, up to 12GB of DDR3 memory, storage options up to a 1TB hard drive or 256GB solid state drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 720p webcam with face-tracking technology, 4-in-1 memory card reader, mini DisplayPort with audio, VGA port, 3.5mm combo jack (headphone/mic), USB 3.0 support, and a 3-cell battery good for up to 9 hours of run time. Business users can choose between various flavors of Windows 7 or 8.

"We obsess over the pursuit of perfection -- as evidenced by more than 20 years of Lenovo ThinkPad design and engineering accolades. However, perfection cannot be achieved without a key ingredient: customer insight," said Dilip Bhatia, vice president and general manager, ThinkPad Business Unit. "The ThinkPad T431s is the first device featuring Lenovo's new design, which represents a comprehensive examination of user experience and input."

The ThinkPad T431s will be available in April starting at around $949.
