Lenovo Intros ThinkPad Laptop USB 3.0 Dock

Lenovo and HP both have found time to unleash loads of new gear in the past day or so, but this one in particular caught our eye. The new ThinkPad Laptop USB 3.0 Dock is a swanky looking device that's powered by DisplayLink and a DL-3900 Dual Head Graphics chip with integrated Gigabit Ethernet and Audio. According to Lenovo, it offers dual video connections (2xDVI), enabling multiple displays to be connected, as well as five USB 3.0 ports for peripheral expansion. One has to wonder how much use these things still have in a market of increasingly powerful laptops, but those who find it useful will be able to buy one starting May 15th for $180.

Are external graphics becoming a thing now? I swear someone else (ie another company) announced a similar product a few months ago (sony?).

Now the question is will they work with other brands laptops. These docks sound really nice for someone who takes a laptop between home and work so they can just plug in when they get to work and go with their external mouse/keyboard and monitors. I like but $179 is a bit much for what I would use it for.

I really don't see the point of this product, even ultrabooks now can run an external display via HDMI and come with USB 3.0 ports. People who have second thoughts of buying a laptop as their main pc may use a product like this but as the author said you can get a beast of a laptop from maingear or other pc builders that can blow away some desktops.
