LG's LSM-100 Mouse Scanner is a Two Trick Rodent

LG's LSM-100 Mouse Scanner is a Two Trick Rodent

You go ahead and decide whether LG's LSM-100 device is a mouse or a scanner. Did you pick one? Great, you're wrong. What's that, you want to change your answer? You're more than welcome to do that, and you're still wrong. That's because the LSM-100 is not a mouse or scanner, it's a mouse and scanner, all rolled into one. Huh?

Someone at LG thought it would a good idea to combine the two, like a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Why? Well, LG says it's about convenience. The way it works is you press the Smart Scan button on the left side of the mouse and then swipe the device over whatever it is you're trying to scan. You can then save your scan in one of several file types, including PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PDF, XLS, and DOC, or simply drag and drop the scan into an application.

The LSM-100 sports LG's Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to convert scanned text into a Word document that can be edited. LG says the compact rodent can scan page sizes up to A3, outclassing some of the portable scanners out there in the market place.

When you're not scanning TPS reports and incriminating photos, LG says the LSM-100 operates as a "top-end mouse" with an accurate and durable laser, but didn't mention specifics, such as little details like DPI and polling rate.

No word on when it will ship or for how much. For now, LG's planning to the show off its two-trick rodent at IFA 2011 in Berlin, Germany.

This reminds me of the handheld Scanners that Iyaz was talking about recently in one of the HotHardware broadcasts. I don't know how well this thing is going to work maybe for reading text, I wonder if they will make it work with bar codes.
