KT To Carry 4G iPhone in April: Report

The Korea Times said on Tuesday that a new version of the iPhone is coming to KT, Apple's partner in Korea, in April.  They called the device the 4G iPhone, but it's unclear if the paper meant "fourth-generation" rather than 4G wireless capability.

One phrase stood out, however: "at the earliest." That means the timing could be later, and still not run afoul of the story being incorrect.
Apple has, in the past, said that the iPhone runs on annual updates, and pushed the new versions out in the middle of the year.

However, the story goes on to say an early release is being planned because of the sheer number of Android devices that are being released, which, although not anywhere near as popular as the iPhone, have to be of some concern to Apple.

The story also added that KT would only sell, in April, to its biggest corporate customers as a "test." After that, it plans to provide the upgraded iPhones to local distributors in June.  Specifications for the new iPhone reportedly include organic light emitting diode (OLED) screens and live video chat functionality (which was rumored before the iPhone 3GS release), as well as a dual core CPU and upgraded graphics chips. Finally, and most surprisingly, the report states that a removable battery is likely.

4G iPhone concept

Apple has always eschewed removable batteries in its iPhones, and recently has done the same with laptops, as well. It would normally seem unlikely they would make this move, because of that, but it's possible the new CPU / GPU combination pulls so much juice that a removable battery would be a necessity.

Although it's been said in the past that the sleekness of the iPhone depends on the battery being a permanent fixture in the device, the Palm Pre seems to show that you can still produce a sleek design with a removable battery.

Recently, reports have suggested Apple that on January 27th, when Apple will announce its new tablet PC, it will also preview the iPhone OS 4.0.  The company has also reportedly given a new iPhone 4.0 beta SDK to developers that includes a "simulator" that is supposed to make it easy to adapt applications to different screen resolutions, as in the tablet vs. the iPhone.  The latest reports state that the tablet is reported to also run the iPhone OS.

We will probably know more about the possibility of an earlier iPhone release than "normal" after the January 27th event.

Never been a big fan of the iPhone. That thing looks tiny tho!

The new battery cover looks cheap tho. Makes me thing of a cheap calculator battery cover or something. It's nice that they finally made it so users can replace the battery... but they could have used a better design. Like how my tilt is... the entire back slide off. It's one solid peice and at first glance would wouldn't think it comes off.

That looks nice. I wonder if that will be the Verizon phone. If you think about it that would make sense, as they are supposed to get the iphone soon, next release seems as good a time as any, and better than most. I am still on the wire on the smartphone thing though. I can see the point in a UV laptop or a netbook with a USB dongle for wireless cell connectivity. However; you have to get a phone with a cellular package and then also 30 or more dollars a month for a data package, and the early termination on a smart phone is very expensive which I get from the companies standpoint. I just don't see it's worth when the same thing is much more possible on particulary more able equipment for less.

my guess is that it'll go to sprint, since they support 4g. I don't think anyone else supports it yet.

I think Verizon is doing a limited roll out right now. I almost went with Sprint, but Sarah had to have a phone so I Upgraded her's. Maybe I will leave her with mom on the family account when it's my time to Upgrade (March I think). There 4G is available here. I still have not convinced myself I need a smart phone yet either though. I like a phone with great technology on it but why would I need internet on my phone. If I wanted mobile internet I would grab one of those BA MSI ultra units and a USB dongle unit rather than a 2 x 3 display phone and I have GPS unit's in the cars so I don't need that either. Except for I have not heard a ton of positive on Sprints CS or there connection stability around me locally. I am also of a mind to grab one of those dell 11" units to you cannot tell me that would be better than a smartphone display.

I have a tilt, which can do... well a lot. But I really only user it for texting, calling, the ocassional game(solitaire lol), the calculator and sometimes pictures.

There are cheaper phones that can do all of the above. My gf actually has one of those cheaper phone with a qwerty keyboard. It doesn't have a touch screen tho, which is something I would like. And it's noticably slower without even getting on the internet. Also when it DOES get on the internet, it has such a small amount of storage that it can't display some websites it tries and tries for a few minutes then just gives up lol.

BUT I tend to keep my phones for a while before trading up. My next phone will hopefully have a snapdragon in it tho :-D I've been hearing good things about it.

The concept looks really sleek. Love the design, even if the battery is unremovable.

Too bad that the US wireless networks are about 15 years behind the Korean ones. Only Sprint has 4G in the states and I'd be willing to wager that AT&T will put up a crappy LA and NYC only 4G coverage so they don't give Apple an excuse to switch the iPhone from being an AT&T exclusive (not that they'd upgrade their crappy 3G network in the meantime).

Well it seems IPhone 4G is slated for release middle of this year.

The Apple-AT&T contract expires this year, and it seems many people have been eagerly waiting for it. Searching for "Apple AT&T" in google brought up a bunch of suggestions about the expiration.

yeah it stinks that the US gets everything on this platform later than China but China has the most users so it makes sense from a business outlook.
