Invulnerable No More! Mac OS

It's long been asserted that Apple computers are invulnerable to viruses. This has not been because the OS is flawless, but rather because hackers focused on the more popular OS: Windows, as well as the fact that most hackers had Windows machines. But no longer.

With increased popularity has come increased vulnerability. And with that, Apple has actually begun recommending antivirus software for its users.

Apple added a
KB article to their site on November 21st. The article, titled "Mac OS: Antivirus utilities," says:
Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult.
Apple recommends three different apps, two of which, Intego VirusBarrier X5 and Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11 for Macintosh, are available from the Apple Online Store. The third, McAfee VirusScan for Mac, is not. According to Dave Marcus, director of security research and communications at McAfee:
"Apple is realizing that malware these days is targeting data, and valuable data exists just as much on an OS platform that is a Mac as it does on an OS platform that is Windows."
More malware is focused on gathering financial information, as we know. No matter what the OS, using an antivirus program, or at least heeding the normal warnings of avoiding opening unknown email attachments and being careful about phishing, is a necessary precaution.

However, this new development probabaly means Apple won't show this ad again (not that I've seen it lately):

Nice pic, its only natural as the OS gains market share for this to happen. Same will happen to Linux (although bugs are found and patched quicker).

Some Apple fans are still so elitist that they will just shrug it off.  But they may pay a price for that.
