Intel Lands Licensing Agreement With Skyhook's Location System
Location-based services just might be the buzzword of the hour, and as
mobile communications grow, we think this will become more and more the
rule rather than the exception. Location-based apps aren't uncommon to
find these days; in fact, we'd say most social networking apps are
already location-enabled, and more and more apps are picking up on the
trend. While privacy is obviously an issue, those who "opt-in" stand to
gain a whole new level of functionality by allowing an app to know their
location.
Now, both Skyhook and Intel are teaming up to enable location services on more mobile devices. These two are huge names, and Skyhook has been a leading in positioning for some time now. Intel has actually licensed Skyhook's location system and plans to distribute it through the AppUp center so it's available on a wide variety of Intel-based devices. Sounds like a smooth move to us, and the more the merrier. Skyhook’s Core Engine hybrid location platform is what's being licensed, which determines precise device location quickly and accurately by synthesizing data from Wi-Fi access points, GPS satellites and cell towers using advanced hybrid positioning algorithms.
Intel will enable Skyhook’s software to deliver advanced positioning capabilities for app developers creating applications for Windows and MeeGo-based devices. It remains to seen what happens next, and honestly, that's mostly in the hands of developers. We're hoping that people put some serious thought into it and develop great location-aware apps in response, but AppUp definitely has a long road to pass before it's an established place such as the App Store. Having Skyhook technology ain't a bad way to lure people in, though!

Barcelona, Spain - February 15, 2011 – Today at Mobile World Congress 2011 Skyhook, the world leader in location positioning, context and intelligence, announced a license and distribution agreement with Intel to make Skyhook’s Core Engine hybrid location platform available to the Intel AppUpSM center through the Intel AppUp developer program.
