Here Come Verizon's Data Tiers, But With Unlimited Still an Option

Verizon Wireless will be joining AT&T as the second of the big 4 U.S. wireless carriers to offer a tiered data plan, on Oct. 28th, a report indicates. Unlike AT&T, however, Verizon Wireless will continue to offer an unlimited data tier, and the price will unchanged from the current unlimited plan.

Here are the details:
  • Two tiers for smartphone owners $15 for 150MB with $0.10 / MB overage, or $29.99 for unlimited access. Compare that to AT&T's 200MB at the $15 price point, or 2GB for $25; there is no unlimited option.
  • As with Verizon Wireless' iPad + MiFi bundle, tablets will have $20, $35, $50 (and $80) tablet plans with 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB data caps, respectively. All will have an overage fee of $10 / GB.
  • Speaking of the MiFi, MiFi, FiveSpot, and integrated modem owners will have 5GB / $50 and 10GB / $80 tiers, with the MiFi and FiveSpot will also getting a 3GB / $35 tier during a 90-day promotion. All of these plans have overage fees of 1GB for $10.
  • Feature phones will keep the current $1.99 "pay as you go" plan.) They will also have $15 for 150MB, or $29.99 for unlimited data tiers, with the old $9.99 / 25MB option vanishing.
  • USB modem pricing stays at $39.99 for 250MB or $59.99 for 5GB.
As we already know, Verizon Wireless has yet to price its 4G service. As rollout of devices and service closes in, the company will make that pricing public. It's nice to see Verizon Wireless kept unlimited data as an option. It's unknown if the Verizon iPhone will "encourage" AT&T to restore an unlimited tier to its service, as well.
