HTC America Lays Off 20 Percent of Workforce

In the early days of Android, HTC practically had a license to print money. We don't mean that literally, mind you, but quarter after quarter, HTC's revenues and profits continued to soar as it capitalized on what was fast becoming the most popular mobile operating system the world had ever seen. Certainly the landscape is different now, and instead of HTC sitting on top of the Android world, Samsung now rules the universe with its Galaxy line. HTC also faces stiff competition from Apple in the grand scheme of mobile, though that was always the case.

Things have changed, and rather than rolling in the dough, HTC is making tough decisions, such as laying off 20 percent of its HTC America division, The Verge reports. President of HTC Americas, Jason Mackenzie, told his team that Friday -- the day pink slips were handed out -- was "the most difficult day of my HTC career."

"Today's reduction in force is a decisive action by HTC Corp (US) to streamline and optimize our organization and improve efficiencies after several years of aggressive growth. Realigning its human resources against key strategic initiatives will help HTC more effectively advance into a new stage of growth and innovation," HTC said in a statement.

HTC also said that as hard as it was to let employees ago, it was a "necessary step to drive ongoing innovation" and to ensure it's able to create desirable products like the HTC One.

Prior to the layoffs, the HTC America division was home to around 150 employees and contractors.Around 30 of those employees were laid off, though some of them may find open positions elsewhere under HTC's umbrella.
