If all the cool kids are running Intel's Sandy Bridge platform, then consider HP's revamped Pavilion dm4x laptop line a sub-$800 hipster. This spunky 14-inch notebook boasts an Intel Core i5 2410M (2.3GHz) processor as its baseline chip, plus a handful of other goodies starting at $730.

Here's what else a base configuration comes with:
  • AMD Radeon HD 6470M graphics with 1GB DDR3
  • 6GB DDR3 RAM
  • 640GB 5400RPM hard drive
  • 8x DVD writer
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Windows Home Premium 64-bit
  • 6-cell battery
There are a handful of upgrades to choose from, including a 7200RPM hard drive for $10 more. Depending on how deep your pockets go, a fully decked out dm4x for under $1,300 kicks things up to an Intel Core i7 2620M processor (2.7GHz), 8GB DDR3 RAM, and 750GB 7200RPM hard drive.
