Gmail for Mobile Gets Faster

If you try to check your Gmail from your phone using a spotty connection, you know this can be a big problem. Now, thanks to Gmail for mobile 2.0 for J2ME-supported and BlackBerry phones, those on-again off-again connections should be less of an issue.

In this version, Google says that they changed their assumptions about a network being always available, and re-thought about the actions a user might perform. The development team then tried to solve for instances where a signal isn’t available. The result is a faster mobile client that is more reliable and has new features. Sounds like a win-win to us.

Gmail for mobile 2.0 provides basic offline support for phones such as the Nokia N95, Sony Ericsson W910i, and BlackBerry Curve. Google also adds the ability to log into multiple accounts at the same time, including Gmail and Google Apps email accounts. To switch between accounts on a phone with a QWERTY keyboard, all you have to do is press the + key.

We've also added support for multiple mobile drafts, undo (using the menu or the z shortcut), and sending mail in the background (no more staring at the "Sending..." dialog until it finally gets sent). --

Finally, Gmail for mobile 2.0 supports over 35 languages, matched with your phone’s language setting.

Nice, I might actually try this on my Blackberry now and use Gmail's spam filtering so I can actually download my inbox and not swamp my phone.
