Fujifilm's FinePix XP170 is a Rugged Point-n-Shoot for Extreme Photographers

Imagine you're on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you spot a great white shark swimming nearby. Do you (A) back away from the edge and gingerly reach for your digital camera with the hopes of snapping a long-distance shot, or (B) dive right into the water to get closer look? If you answered B, Fujifilm's FinePix XP170 might be exactly the type of digital camera you've been looking for.

Fujifilm announced the rugged point-n-shoot this week and said it's an appropriate device for shooting and sharing in extreme conditions, including ones where you're submerged in water.


"The solid build, rubberized coating and riveted metal handgrip make this the toughest FinePix yet!," Fujifilm boasts. "Underwater photographers can dive twice as deep with a FinePix XP170, compared to the FinePix XP50, which means they can keep shooting to depths of 10m. Walkers, bikers and extreme sports enthusiasts will be assured that the FinePix XP170 can survive the drops and knocks. If you like to take pictures of skiing, snowboarding or any other sub-zero activities, the FinePix XP170 will keep functioning all the way down to -10°C. Plus the camera is dust and sand proof, meaning you can take pictures at your favorite beach or when tackling the great outdoor wilderness, you don't have to worry about the sand clogging up the camera."

Couch potatoes need not apply, is what Fujifilm is basically saying. The FinePix XP170 sports a 14.4MP CMOS sensor, 5x optical zoom (28-140mm equivalent to a 35mm camera) with water repellant coating, Wireless Image Transfer technology (for any Android smartphone/tablet or iPhone/iPad), Full HD movie capture and underwater movie mode, a 2.7-inch LCD with anti-reflective coating, and more.

Look for the FinePix XP170 to ship in June for $280 MSRP.
