Don't Give Blu-Ray The Crown Just Yet...

Despite the recent announcement from WB and the subsequent cancellation of HD DVD related press announcements, it seems that the format wars are not over just yet.

"I don't think we're in a position to go out and declare a winner," said Steve Eastman, Target Corp's (TGT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) vice president of consumer electronics, in an interview.

As long as there are two standards competing in public, consumers will stay away, he added.

"Until it settles completely I think we're going to continue to see consumers sitting on the sidelines," Eastman said.”

There are already rumors about other key studios dropping HD DVD.  If those rumors prove true, then everything is more or less over, but until then both sides continue to grapple for a relatively small chunk of the overall market.

everything is really hinging on paramount at the moment.. I hope they go ahead and go blu-ray instead of limping along with hd-dvd another year.

Another big factor is the current xbox 360 player base.. if Microsoft could get a cost effective blu-ray addon out for it soon.. then id say that would be the final nail in the coffin as well for the people on the fence.

I don't see that happening as Microsoft and Intel both are major industry supporters of HD DVD's.

Hi All,

Maybe we'll see something like this, BLU-RAY will be more for settop boxes & HD DVD more for the PC. Almost like HDMI was more for consumer electronics where Displayport is for the PC.

Well I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time thats for sure. I just didn't see it making much sense unless there was a huge demand for it. I guess if enough people put up a  stink about wanting it than they would implement it. The article still stated they may be considering it. Nothing is certain.
