Dell Brings Back XP!

Dell has reacted to the market’s general unhappiness with being locked-into a purchase of Vista with a new PC and has started offering XP on their home machines again:
"Amid significant customer demand, the computer maker said on Thursday that it has returned to offering the older Windows version as an option on some of its consumer PCs.

Like most computer makers, Dell switched nearly entirely to Vista-based systems following Microsoft's mainstream launch of the operating system in January. However, the company said its customers have been asking for XP as part of its IdeaStorm project, which asks customers to help the company come up with product ideas."
Customers have spoken and it seems that Dell has listened.  Good move.

You gotta give the people what they want. If that means shipping newer PCs with XP, then so be it.

I hope they didn't have to convince some Product Manager on this one. It is a virtual no-brainer and competitive suicide. Think about it... You're looking for a new PC from one of big brand names, HP, Dell, Gateway, whoever. You get similar specs and features on three models, and pricing is within the ballpark on each but one or two only offer Vista and no option for XP. You're a computer newb, so which one are you going to buy? The one that has an OS that you've never seen before?

Or better yet, you're an IT Manager in a small business that has to use legacy software to run the company. Which PC are you going to buy then? Take a chance on Vista?

Dell may have listened but I'm sure the calls were quite defening too.

About damn time they did this! I was reluctant referring people to buy Dell PCs from Dell Home due to the very fact that XP was no longer available.

Dell was already still offering XP in the Business stores, though, which was definitely a smart thing to do.
