Beer Company Experiments with Moonvertising

Rolling Rock, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch, has come up with an interesting ad campaign: offbeat, though definitely high-powered.  Or requiring a lot of power, anyway.

It appears to be a teaser to a new advertising campaign for Rolling Rock beer. According to their “Moonvertising,” web site: “…we’re trying a new, more tasteful advertising campaign this year: Putting our logo on the moon.” It goes on to invite readers to “broadcast your own message on the moon as well.”

Why, of course! There has to be a social media aspect to the campaign in this day and age. The web site is clever, but painfully slow — especially the videos.

Of course, being able to supply enough power to really burn something into the moon with a laser - not going to happen.  Nice ad campaign though!

seems like a waste of energy

The laser wouldn't need to be powerful enough to burn an image into the moon. It would however need to be extremely powerful, in order to pass through the atmosphere and reach the moon(Its average distance from the Earth is 384,403 km) without diffusing into an unrecognizable blur. Although even at this strength if anything were to pass through the laser before it leaves the atmosphere it would be incinerated. This would be far more feasible if the laser were positioned outside of the Earth's atmosphere in a satellite for example. Such idle speculation is meaningless since this is simply an interesting advertising campaign that exists merely on the internet.

Aw come on Mankind hasn't done any thing majorly stupid in a few years, lets toast some birds and planes with a laser in the name of beer!

I'm with methious on this one. Despite the SciFi channel's warning about this back in 1999, let's project images on the moon! (Indeed, there's no reason to permanently burn anything there, since it's all highly reflective up there anyway.)

yeah it would be cool if it could be done but it just doesnt seem feasible at this point

I hope it never becomes feasable.  I DO NOT want to see advertisements when I look at the moon.  That place is unspoiled by humans (except the plaque and US flag).  I like to be able to look up and see it shining back, not telling me to drink rolling rock, which sucks by the way!

well maybe they would advertise a better beer

 Hehe indeed.

Well..Considering me a romantic...But a bad idea even though I know this won't happen in my lifetime...lol. I don't want to see the moon tainted by human hands. It's truely beautiful to stare up at the stars and moon during clear nights, and just letting your mind run on how vast the universe truly is...and how miniscule and unimportant we really are =P.

Yes, I agree. If any advertising were to actually be done on the moon it would certainly be in poor taste. It's bad enough to get bombarded with adds in the mail, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, movies, billboards, web, email, fax, text msgs, etc. If the moon were to become a new advertising venue there would truly be no escape.

You guys...you just misread the article......basically AnheiserBusch is going to MOON you ( )( ) -- all while advertising because of said person's now decorated hind-quarters (might be a busch or bud logo on each cheek) Cool

Or did I maybe read it too fast? Stick out tongue

lol..I know it isn't serious...I'm just speaking in regards to the day we eventually get to this being a possibility =P.

Advertisements will be everywhere in the coming future.  Probably Luna too.  I'm not entirely againt advertising if it means free things, so maybe advertisements on Luna will eventually pay for trips there.

That sounds like an interesting possibility. If it meant a free trip to the moon, they can put adds for Viagra on the moon for all I care.
