Apple iPhone 5 Reportedly Goes into Production with a New Form Factor

Apple's next generation iPhone device is reportedly gearing up for production, or at least that's what an employee at Foxconn revealed to 9to5Mac.Foxconn is where most of Apple's products are made, including its iPhone line and the upcoming iPhone 5, as it's currently being called.

The tipster said there are a handful of iPhone prototypes floating around, and once Apple decides on which design it likes best, Foxconn will roll with it. That makes it difficult to predict what it will look like or what the feature-set will be, but according to the chatty Foxconn worker, all of the models have at least a 4-inch screen. In addition, none of them sport the teardrop shape that was previously rumored, though all the current iPhone samples feature a different form factor than the iPhone 4 and 4S, so get ready to upgrade your third-party cases and other gear.

9to5Mac reckons Apple is on pace to launch the iPhone 5 this summer at WWDC, putting the company back on track with a timeframe that was disrupted last year. And while none of this is concrete info, 9to5Mac points out that its source is the same one that revealed late last summer that Apple was building an iPhone 4S, and not the iPhone 5 everyone was expecting. Duly noted.

Nothing really new here, we all knew that the new iphone was going to have a different form factor. They change the model number when they change the body style. Im thinking all the same stuff as the 4S but with maybe a quad core processor? Im sure they will also through something new in to get the kids excited.

Do you really thing quad core? I don't think they will quite yet, it's not apple style to go for brute power. Not enough apps require more power at this point, maybe the iphone 5s will have a quad core. I'm assuming a faster more energy efficient dual-core a5. I think it will have the slightly larger screen and longer battery life with 4g capabilities.

And the fanboys will wet themselves :)

Drake is probably right. Brute force doesn't do it for Apple usually. They'll go with an increased functionality and a few new ideas that we don't even ~know~ that we can't live without yet,...............

Ha! Is there is something we have to discuss is the price. The 4s came with 4g so yea.

The iphone 4s is only 3g and not 4g LTE. I'm on big red, maybe someone else has a 4g version I'm not aware of. Apple claims it gets 4g speeds without being 4g capable on At&T's network.

I think they will go quad-core. You can get a better performance yield even with the same or slightly higher wattage when moving to a smaller manufacturing process. I would bet that iPad 3 and iPhone 6 (remember that the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS were considered the iPhone 2 and 3, respectively) will both have quad-core processors.
