Apple Gains Smartphone Market Share at Android's Expense

Apple ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. during the three-month period ending in January, 2013, grabbing 37.8 percent of the OEM market share, according to the latest data released from the comScore MobiLens service. Samsung again came in second, increasing its share from 19.5 percent two quarters ago to 21.4 percent in the most recent quarter.

Both smartphone behemoths gained market share at the expense of HTC and Motorola, wrestling away 1.7 percent from the former and 1.4 percent from the latter. LG was the only other major smartphone player to see a gain in the most recent quarter, inching ahead by 0.3 percentage points.

In terms of OS penetration, Google is still the top dog with a 52.3 percent share of the market, though that's down 1.3 percent from the previous quarter. Apple capitalized by growing its share 3.5 percent, and interestingly enough, iOS was the only platform that saw some forward moving momentum. BlackBerry, Microsoft, and Symbian all moved backwards.

BlackBerry's losses were the most significant at -1.9 percent. That's concerning for a company that has so much riding on BlackBerry 10.
