A 3dBi antenna is hardly a high gain antenna... in fact, most standard antennas either have no gain or are 3dBi. Also, most routers ship with an output power of around 50mW, this is correct, but they are all capable of going up to 100 with a 3rd party firmware. :-) Also... your router's coverage doesn't matter if the client doesn't have enough power to send the signal back. Also the EIRP of this router is 200mW. FCC Allows up to 1W for indoor use w/an antenna with 6dBi or less of gain. ;-) I wouldn't call 200mW "high power" :-P |

Interesting I wonder how well this device would work as a rogue AP on a corporate network considering that it self configures. I know it would not work in my school building because our wireless controller would squash it and the web filter would get in the way of open access anyways still an interesting concept. Though I certainly would not think this would appeal to home users much since most buy routers that have wireless built into them. |

That depends on how aggressive the WIPS is on your schools wireless network :-P If it is only setup to detect rogues and not automatically kill them, then you could get away with it for a while. Especially if no one ever checks the alerts :-P If you're doing bad thing, they can triangulate where you're at and come take you out! lol I've gone rogue hunting before lol It's fun. Ad-Hocs are not allowed on our network. We saw one pop up and went looking for it. We were walking about with air magnet to find it, started asking questions and a couple minutes later the network disappeared lol I think they got the hint. :-P |
