Amazon Rumored To Be Developing A Smartphone
Amazon appears to be working with device maker Foxconn on the project. Other partners making components and actually building the devices may include Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments.
Nudging its way into the mobile phone market is a logical next step for Amazon, as it has found success with its e-Reader and presumes success with the just-released Kindle Fire tablet. The biggest advantage the e-tailer has over the competition is that it can apparently sell its devices at-cost; reportedly, it’s taking a (very tiny) loss on each Kindle Fire it sells. Thus, building a serviceable smartphone for $150-$170, as the Reuters reports suggest it could, and selling it for around that price would allow Amazon to undercut its competition on price quite a bit.
Of course, that’s assuming the rumored device is actually any good.

Well... The success of the Amazon Kindle Fire has given Amazon some optimism to go on with other projects... I don't know how they would be able to combine a Kindle and a smartphone but crazier things have been done. I'm going to be guessing that the main draws of the smartphone will be the interface, the massive Amazon library of apps and affordability... Though I don't know how it's going to make itself standout in the smartphone market where one phone might of already done what the Kindle is trying to do... Still, if this is true then it's pretty exciting to see what Amazon does; sure it won't be as revolutionary but it will be an Amazon device. |

"I not surprised. Amazon has a rich ecosystem to cater to its devices ala Apple. They also have the buying power as well to get those devices to customers at an accessible price. They have learned well. Its not about having the most ridiculously fastest chip with a huge amount of RAM or the biggest display. Its about that the apps are well written and efficient ,the interface is simple and easy to use, and it must have a gimmick (like Siri, at launch time) to wow the crowds. Last but not least, hardware that's enough to do the task, enough , not overkill." |
Don't take it as an official confirmation though... It's still a rumor; let us not forget that the world is filled with tons of smartphones ever since the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and since then there many phones have been released for many ranges and for the price that Amazon would of offered it... I mean aside from the interface and the app market; there is nothing much Amazon can offer that the other phone can't... except for the interface. In a world where LG and Samsung and even HTC make phones that don't have a huge amount of RAM or a fast processor; what can Amazon do to stand out; what can Amazon do to make a phone that's cheap without a subsidized contract? That's what you have to ask yourself right there. |

I think this is only natural for Amazon to make a smartphone after their Kindle Fire. The main reason is they have already done much of the development with the Fire. I am not sure if they will be as successful with a smartphone though considering they probably won't have anything unique to offer. |
