Acer Iconia A1: A 7.9" Android Tablet For Under $200

Look, it's the Nexus 7. Look closer, and you'll see that it's not. No, this is Acer's attempt to one-up Asus' Nexus 7, and it's called the Iconia A1 Tablet. Marketed as a "one-handed tablet," this 7" Android slate offers up a 7.9" LED-backlit (IPS) display with a 1024x768 screen resolution, a 5MP camera, 7-hour battery life, MediaTek Quad Core 1.2GHz processor and access to the Google Play store.

It weighs under a pound and measures 0.44" thick, while also including GPS, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, micro-USB port, a micro-HDMI connector and your choice of 8GB/16GB internal storage. There's a microSD expansion slot as well, and the $199 starting price is sure to catch some eyes. It'll ship in June, but one has to wonder if Google will have already made it obsolete with whatever tablet is inevitably launched at Google I/O later in the month.

One other new Android tablet to launch this month that's worth reviewing is the Novo 8 Discovery from Ainol Electronics - which previously won runner-up for "Best Tablet of the Year" at CES 2012 for the first in the Novo series – the new Novo 8 Discovery priced at $155 is one of the first tablets on the market to work with Miracast HD Wireless technology, similar to Apple's $150 AirPlay system... and with the new Miracast adapter (price $35), it provides wireless connection to an HDTV - ideal for streaming movies (Netflix), to play video games, and display any other tablet content to a TV.

The Novo 8 Discovery offers a 7.85" screen (mini iPad size), a Quad Core processor with 2GB DDR3, 16GB Memory, Bluetooth, HDMI, a 5000 mAh battery, MicroSD storage, Android 4.2.2 O/S and Google Play -- One of the first sites to offer this new model is called Tablet Sprint -- which also features a promotion with Bonus Apps, include the popular 3D game Shadowgun, and an Office Suite with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
