ASUS M3N78-EMH HDMI Sneak Peek

Home Theater PC aficionados will surely be interested in this one.  In January of this year, during the Consumer Electronics Show, NVIDIA disclosed details regarding their nForce 700a series of chipsets, the GeForce 8200 IGP, and Hybrid SLI.  Motherboards based on the chipsets haven’t stormed the market just yet, but we wanted to show you something ASUS has in the works that’s slated to arrive very soon...


    
ASUS M3N78-EMH HDMI

What you see pictured here is the ASUS M3N78-EMH HDMI.  The M3N78-EMH HDMI is a socket AM2+ motherboard, compatible with virtually all AMD single, dual- and quad-core desktop processors.  The board is built around NVIDIA’s GeForce 8200 chipset, which offers Hybrid SLI support as well as HyperTransport 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0.

Due to the fact that the M3N78-EMH HDMI is built around the NVIDIA GeForce 8200 chipset, it’s equipped with a DX10-capable IGP with PureVideo HD support for good Blu-ray / HD DVD playback.  But it’s also got multiple monitor outputs – in this case VGA, DVI, and HDMI – and supports multiple displays and Hybrid SLI.  We have yet to take the ASUS M3N78-EMH HDMI for a spin on the test bench, but as soon as we do, we’ll let you know how it performs.

I like that they cut away about 1/4 of the northbridge heatsink to make way for expansion cards. I've seen some motherboards where the first expansion slot, usually a PCI-E x1, will be rendered useless by an oversized chipset cooling solution.

Hybrid SLI or in AMD's case Hybrid Crossfire is the only way to go for mGPU's. Since graphics cards become outdated so quickly it is nice to know your mGPU won't just be dead wait once you have to add a graphics card. The biggest problem I see with this motherboard is that it is for an AMD chipset. I am eager to see the new IGPs for Intel's platform that support Hybrid SLI, which should be out soon.
