AMD Phenom Die Photo

AMD Phenom Die Photo

AMD has just revealed another detail regarding their upcoming desktop quad-core processors that we wanted to share with you.  A few weeks ago, we talked about AMD's new branding for their desktop derivatives of the Barcelona core, now dubbed the Phenom FX, X4 and X2.  If you're unfamiliar with Phenom, the processors will be based on AMD's K10 architecture and will feature a faster on-die memory controller, support 64-bit and 128-bit SSE operations, and they'll be outfitted with 2MB of on-chip L2 cache (512KB dedicated per core) in addition to 2MB of shared L3 cache.  The new chips will also feature support for HyperTransport 3.0, along with a numerous architectural enhancements.  Instead of revealing some more of the juicy details regarding those enhancements, however, AMD just sent over a tasty photo of a Phenom die. What no comments? Well, I always have two or three cents to throw in...

That's a big honkin dinner plate-o-silicon. Now let's see if they can produce these puppies in volume. ;-)

Is this a duct-taped, rush to market processor like Intel's quad or is this the real deal?

Duct-taped? A Native Quad Core sounds great in theory, but from a performance standpoint many websites have said this shouldn't matter.

With the 2 Die method it's proven that Intel can produce a higher yield per wafer and in higher volume, ultimately keeping the prices down.

AMD proves this with their setbacks with Barcelona showing in their ship dates moving from June/July to August/September and now December...

I'm betting Intel's Native Quad, Nehalem, will be out before Phenom. But, what does it matter.

Intel will have had their Quad core out for almost a year before Barcelona even comes out.

AMD showing off their barcelona at 1.6 Ghz is as bad a showing as they did to Ananlysts months ago with a display of 'Task Manager.'

I have long since said good bye to my AMD Thunderbird. I've lost faith in AMD, completely.
