AMD Execs Get A New Office - Or A Plank To Walk

AMD has announced a management shakeup. They're struggling mightily to compete with industry leader Intel right now. AMD COO Dirk Meyer is reshuffling his executive personnel deck by moving some people sideways, some people up the ladder -- and some were given an empty printer paper box to clean their desk into before being escorted to the door. Oops, I meant they've: "...left the company to pursue other opportunities..."

"AMD is in a precarious situation right now from a business standpoint and it has to take some drastic measures," said Brian Matus, vice president of market research at IC Insights. "I am surprised there haven't been more moves. I think AMD had to take some cost-cutting measures and other measures that put them in a position to restructure the business and possibly even set it up for a potential sale in the future."

Hang in there, AMD. Without you in the market, Intel will be able to treat microchip buyers like a baby treats a diaper.

Similar thing happened to intel after the Netburst arcitecture debockle. I think it may take a year or two for AMD to get back on its feet but when it does it will be a stronger company. All we can do is hope that bulldozer will live up to the hype and that soon AMD will have a brand new arcitecture to WOW us with. Funny twist in this story is that Microsoft backs AMD more now since Intel started putting it's CPUs in the MACs.

Speaking of Xboxes, why not choice of both Intel and AMD powered Xboxes?

And Greg's last point is fundamental to good economics: without competition, the monopoly (or leading producer) will become inefficient - so yes, it is a good thing that AMD survives and regains lost ground

Because console games and optimized for certain hardware.  No AMD and Intel CPUs match up exactly in terms of performance.  But if you mean that MS design a certain chip and both Intel and AMD make it and adhere to its specificiations, than I guess they could do it.  But I don't see that happening.
