AMD Breaks Overclocking Record (Again)

The first time AMD's FX-8150 processor found itself in the Guinness World Records, it took a team of AMD sponsored overclockers (and a whole lot of liquid helium) working together to push the processor to 8429.38MHz. And this time? Andre Yang, working by himself, used the same model chip to break the record set in September and set a new one, which now stands at 8461.51MHz.

Andre Yang accomplished the feat with a healthy dose of liquid nitrogen and an eye popping 1.992V. He used a base clockspeed of 272.95MHz with a 31x multiplier.



He used the same model motherboard as the previous overclocking team, an Asus Crosshair V Formula. A lonely 2GB stick of Corsair memory sat in observance at 909.8MHz with 9-9-9-24T timings. And just as before, only two out of the eight cores were enabled -- still an impressive feat and one that underscores the potential of AMD's Bulldozer architecture, at least in terms of headroom (extreme cooling notwithstanding).

I would like to see how far it goes with more mainstream cooling techniques. I don't think liquid nitrogen (or helium) session which are not practical and only lasts for very short period is of any relevance at all. But I do get why all the hype about it considering humans obssession with speed and limits.

@KreepyK: I doubt anyone would get beyond 5ghz with a good air cooler, and with liquid probably low to mid 5s. This is based on my observations from many reviews and other forum posts, where the average overclock seems to have a high of around 4.7 on air. I might be wrong though, and if so I'd like to see it.

I believe the ban on Andre was lifted/withdrawn. It's a crazy overclock, and even though I feel AMD made a tradeoff that I shouldn't have to put up with in 2011 (lower IPC for higher clocks) it still looks good.

I do have one question: doesn't overclocking void your warranty? If so, why do CPU companies continue to 'market' the ability to potentially damage your chip. Andre's CPU-Z says it's almost at 2v!
