A Peek At Ubuntu's New Touch Support

While there's still no official word on which PC manufacturers will produce a Ubuntu touch netbook, the company released a sneak-peak video that shows it's new Netbook Edition Unity interface and gesture library in action.

Ubuntu has so far certified a list of 27 laptops and 7 netbooks that work with its full-fledged recent 10.10 release, but has certified none yet for its Unity interface with a touch screen. However, one of those stamped-for-approval netbooks is Dell's Latitude 2100, which includes a touchscreen. The rumor is that the Dell Latitude 2100 does pretty well with Unity installed

The demo sure looks like its being done on a Dell Latitude XT2 Tablet PC, perhaps another clue as to which vendor will be first to offer it. The XT2 is not one of the laptops that Ubuntu has certified for use with 10.10.

I still hate Unity. I really don't understand this move. I guess it's a little more touch screen friendly, but the old netbook edition had such a fantastic interface. Unity is slow and laggy and makes the OS unusable on a netbook. The old interface seems like it would work just fine on a touchscreen.

Looks like people shipping netbooks agree with you Bob: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/10/system-76-starling-netbooks-wont-ship-with-slow-confusing-ubuntu-unity/

Hopefully Canonical will have Unity up to snuff by the time 11.04 goes final next April.

The wonderful thing you and I know:  You could buy a netbook that used this desktop, decide you didn't like it, and unlike Windows or Mac's:  just install a completely different desktop!

One of the things that's confusing to new Linux users is the fact that there are a half dozen completely independently coded desktops (think: the screen with your start bar) to choose from on a Linux system.  If you don't like the way the icons/menus work:  replace it!
