T-Mobile Reaps Rewards From Uncarrier Strategy, Sees 8.3 Million Customer Additions In 2014

T-Mobile has been aggressive in its campaign to woo customers away from the competition, which it's successfully been able to do through its so-called "Uncarrier" campaign. So far it's working like a charm -- the wireless carrier today announced some preliminary data for the fourth quarter of 2014, revealing that it added 2.1 million net customers to the fray in Q4 alone.

For the full year, T-Mobile saw 8.3 million total net customer additions, making it the biggest year of net customer additions in the company's history. It's no coincidence that the record breaking performance comes at the same time outspoken T-Mobile chief John Legere decided to shake things up by eliminating customer contracts and simplifying pricing plans.

"We continued to take share from our competitors and attracted 8.3 million net customers in 2014 who were looking for value, simplicity and transparency," said Legere. "While my competitors are hiding behind less valuable connected device subscriber additions and managing profit expectations to the downside, T-Mobile delivered over 2.1 million customers in Q4, while managing the balance between growth and profitability. Needless to say, 2014 was a record breaking year."

T-Mobile is firing on all cylinders. By adding 2.1 million customers in Q4, the company can boast seven consecutive quarters of more than 1 million net customer additions. All tallied, T-Mobile is now home to 55 million subscribers, the same number that Sprint announced having at the end of the third quarter last year.

At this pace, T-Mobile could leapfrog Sprint by the middle of the year to become the nation's third largest wireless carrier behind AT&T (No. 2) and Verizon (No. 1).
