Microsoft Acknowledges Disc Drive Glitch Affecting "Small Number" of Xbox One Consoles
A growing number of gamers have been complaining about an annoying issue affecting a "very small number" of Xbox One consoles. The issue has to do with the built-in disc drive not working properly. It seems that all or most who received a faulty console hear an awfully unsettling grinding noise when popping in a game or movie.
A day after initially writing about the issue, gaming news site Kotaku said it received around 150 emails from gamers who said they received a faulty system. Some offered up videos of their experience, other complained that they had spent hours on the phone waiting for a Microsoft customer support agent to answer.
The issue is definitely with the disc drive and not tied to a specific game or move. YouTube user "CrowbCat" put together a montage of Xbox One disc drive failures that demonstrate the problem using a variety of games, and in each case, there's a nerve-wracking grinding sound.
"The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers," Microsoft told Kotaku in a statement. "We're working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers."
Microsoft's advance exchange program allows gamers to receive a replacement Xbox One before sending in their faulty unit.
Sony has also had issues with some of its PlayStation 4 consoles, in which affected gamers complained of a persistent blue glowing light in place of the PS4 booting up. Growing pains are to an extent are to be expected with new product launches. Both Sony and Microsoft announced that they have sold over 1 million of their respective consoles in the first 24 hours of availability.
