Google Primes Our Tastebuds By Sampling 'Android M' Names

The challenge of raising a child starts the moment you realize you're going to be a parent and must pick out a name. Sounds easy, but it really isn't. You inevitably find yourself looking up baby names, either in a book or on the web, and eventually you land on something you like. However, it's a process, and it's where Google finds itself right now in regards to Android.

There's an added challenge to the process for Google since, historically, major Android builds have been named after delicious treats. Not without purpose, Google maintains that "since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert," and so that's been the case starting with Android 1.5 Cupcake.

Another wrinkle is that Google goes in alphabetical order. After Cupcake there was Donut (1.6) then Eclair (2.0 to 2.1), Froyo (2.2 to 2.2.3), Gingerbread (2.3 to 2.3.7), Honeycomb (3.0 to 3.2.6), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0 to 4.0.4), Jelly Bean (4.1 to 4.3.1), KitKat (4.4 to 4.4.4), and of course Lollipop (5.0 to 5.1.1).

Next up is Android M, which is currently in its second developer preview. As Android M rolls into view, Google decided to have some fun by teasing some potential names on Twitter. Google posted a picture of various desserts representing previous Android builds with captions for possible Android M names, including Moon pie, milkshake, and malt ball. There's even a jingle to go along with it.

It will be interesting to see if Google partners up with a candy company like it did for KitKat. There are a few possibilities for Android M if going that route, such as M&M, Mars (the candy bar, not the planet), Maltesers, and Moon Pie, to name some possibilities.

Name aside, Android M will include some sweet upgrades, including native support for USB Type-C, Android Pay, and better battery life.
