Zuckerberg, Musk, and Kutcher Offer VC Backing To AI Startup That Wants To Replicate Your Neocortex

Setting aside for a moment how jarring it is to see Ashton Kutcher’s name associated with Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, the trio are among investors in a startup called Vicarious FPC that has lofty goals for artificial intelligence technology.

Specifically, Vicarious wants to essentially replicate the human brain’s neocortex, which is the area that involves thought and language, spatial senses, body movements, and more. That’s of course the great dream of all AI--if you can accomplish all of that you basically have a human--but Vicarious thinks it can pull it off with its Recursive Cortical Network.

This is the company, incidentally, that was developing a way to beat CAPTCHAs with AI. The technology is impressive, but it has quite a ways to go.

Vicarious sees its AI as a way to help solve the world’s greatest problems, such as curing diseases, figuring out more efficient and effective renewable energy, and so on.

Whether or not Vicarious ever accomplishes its goals, the company now has another $40 million to work with, thanks in part to Zuckerberg, Musk, and Kutcher.
